On January 28, 2021, the Maine Secretary of State’s Office issued a decision to remove Former President Donald J. Trump from the 2024 Republican primary ballot. The reason for the removal was due to the former President’s attempted interference in the November 2020 election and the events of January 6, 2021. In its decision, the Office stated that Trump may be deemed ineligible to become a candidate for a major party nomination if he “posed a significant risk to the American people”. The Office also found that the Former President’s ongoing efforts to undermine and cast doubt on the results of the November 2020 election could lead to further serious acts of violence and civil unrest. As a result, it was deemed that the former President’s continued candidacy poses a threat to the integrity of Maine’s election process. The Office’s decision is final.
